Biblical understanding about Israel
We continue to provide seniors with food parcels, especially in the winter months. It is difficult but rewarding work, to be a comfort to His People in exile. But right now we have a serious problem: counting all the requests form the entire Ukraine (including the war zone in the east of the country) we will need six thousand food parcels to last through the end of April. At this point we still need the money for 5,450 of those.

We can look back with gratitude for the many thousands of olim who came home for good from Ukraine and other former Soviet Republics since the beginning of this year (2017). Every month more than 2,000 Jewish men and women make aliyah world wide and more than 25 percent of them come from Ukraine. In November alone from Ukraine 728 olim and in the month of December more than 1,000 Jewish men and women will have made this journey or plan to do so.

We met a long time ago at one of the events of Kiev Hesed. I do not know what was so special about her that I remembered her so well, but she always kept herself apart from the rest. Her history and background in a nutshell. Her grandmother and grandfather, Chana Iosifovna and Gersh Mordukhovich, were shot in Babi Yar along with other relatives. Anna Borisovna has an intelligent appearance, which betrays her nationality. At school, fellow students and teachers always made fun of her.

“What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have You come here to torture us before the appointed time?” (Matthew 8:28-32) “Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” (Matthew 25:41) “And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” (Revelation 20:10) “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12)

Who would want to come to Ukraine in December, I wondered, as I was packing for another flight to Kiev just before Christmas. I was not entirely wrong with my weather concerns, but that didn’t keep seven Dutch and four German participants from heading to Ukraine for this year’s last working trip to help the Jewish people there, and to learn about what they have been through.

Every year Christians for Israel distributes food parcels in Ukraine amongst struggling Jewish families, many of them are Holocaust survivors or refugees. A large group of volunteers assists Koen Carlier (our aliyah fieldworker in Ukraine) with packing and distributing thousands of food parcels and deliver them to needy Jewish Ukrainians. With the harsh Ukrainian winter at hand, and the explosive rise in living costs due to the conflict in Eastern Ukraine, this is no luxury. And this is only the beginning.

By Anemone Rüger.. A fresh breeze is blowing, carrying first the Ukrainian, then the Israeli national anthem, the Hatikva. The sound travels across a wheat field onto the horizon where horse stables used to be. They served as living quarters for the Jews from the village who were enslaved as forced labourers back then, when first the Germans, then the Romanians occupied this strip of land.

By Ruben Ridderhof.. The Bible tells us how the kingdom of Israel was divided in the time of King Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, and how the ten tribes of Israel were taken into exile by the Assyrians and dispersed. Yet the prophets Hosea and Ezekiel prophesied that the Lord would one day reunite the twelve tribes. Today it seems like these prophesies are being fulfilled. In North-Eastern India resides a unique group of people called the Bnei Menashe, ‘Sons of Manasseh.’ For centuries they have continued to tell each other about their roots.

By Marie-Louise Weissenböck.. Under the theme ‘From Abraham to Israel today’ a group of 23 participants from Austria, three from Germany and one from Switzerland, toured Israel for nine days, beginning 26 October. Marie-Louise Weissenböck (Regional Director Europe and Chairwoman in Austria) and Moshe Gabay (Keshet Tours Israel) led the tour. The main objective of the tour was to deepen our Biblical understanding of the role Israel and the Jewish nation play in God’s plan of redemption. We achieved this by gaining knowledge of the facts on the ground in Israel today and by meeting various people belonging to Israel’s diverse society.

By Andrew Tucker.. There is a lot of talk about the end times, or ‘last days’, that have been prophesied in the Bible. The term ‘end days’ in the Bible does not mean the end of the earth or the end of the world. It means the end of a phase of world history (the Greek word is ‘aeon’ meaning ‘vital force’, ‘generation’ or ‘period of time’). In Matthew 24, the disciples ask Jesus “what will be the sign of your coming and the end of the age?”. Jesus answers by telling them about all the things that will happen before ‘the end’. He talks about ‘birth pains’ (verse 8), wars, famines, earthquakes and other signs of the ‘end’. In all of this, He speaks in the context of the prophecies of the Old Testament which are full of God’s promises to send the Messiah to usher in the kingdom.

It would be built in the same location that the Temple was destroyed by the heathen nations, Babel and Rome. But why build it in Jerusalem? What is so special about Jerusalem and Mount Zion? What’s unique about this small mountain, 800 meters above sea level, at the edge of the desert?

The visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu reflects deep relationship between Australia and Israel. Over the last 100 years, Australia has played an instrumental role in the creation of the Jewish homeland, and has been blessed by the contributions of hundreds and thousands of its Jewish citizens. Today the two nations share deep cultural, business, and technological ties. The Australian government is to be commended for its positive relationship with the State of Israel, and its constructive approach towards the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. In the months and years ahead, we must continue to play an active and constructive role.

By Andrew Tucker.. When speaking about the events leading to His return, Jesus taught that “Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled” (Luke 21:24). No doubt He was referring to many passages in the Hebrew Tenach, in which Jerusalem is described as the city to which the Messiah will come, and from which the word of the Lord will go forth into the nations, and peace will cover the whole earth (see eg. Isaiah 2). Are these words being fulfilled before our very eyes?

When Elena was telling me her story, her eyes were moist with tears. Memories about the events back in 2014, when the war in Ukraine broke out, are still extremely vivid for her. But the story of the Gerashenko family starts long before, 30 years ago in Donetsk (Eastern Ukraine) - with the marriage between Sergei and Elena. It was a beautiful young Jewish family – he was a teacher of history and she just finished her medical studies and was looking for a job as a physician. Then followed the birth of their first child, a cute curly-headed girl Ira.

We are in Chernovtsy, a Ukrainian city close to the Moldavian border. A city where before the Second World War around 50,000 Jews used to live, half of the population. They had a vibrant Jewish life. Today, there are only 1,300 Jews left. Most of the others were killed during the Holocaust. The horrors of the Holocaust in Ukraine cannot be described in words. The story goes that the screaming and yelling of the Jews that were murdered and abused in Chernovtsy chilled the inhabitants to the bone, so that out of desperation they started ringing the church bells, to overrule the death screams.

By Koen Carlier.. Good and bad news! Let’s start with the good news. The additional emergency aid action is now in full swing. During the past weeks we were able to pack and distribute hundreds of extra food parcels. Next Monday (February 6) we expect another truckload to pack another one thousand food parcels! Wednesday night we were able to bring two minibuses with olim to the airport for their departure to Israel. Their flight was scheduled to take off at 3 o’clock in the morning, but due to dense fog their flight was cancelled. Therefore we took all olim back to their villages. Last weekend we took them to our shelter in Kiev to spend the night. On Monday morning they finally left for real! Amongst the olim was an 82-year-old Holocaust survivor.

As we launch into 2017, one senses that we are in a new season in God's plan for redemption of His creation. In recent months we have seen many nations using the UN Security Council and UNESCO to adopt resolutions that in effect deny the connection between the Jewish people and the old city of Jerusalem, including the Temple Mount. These distortions of historical realities are a direct attack on the legitimacy of the connection between the Jewish people and the city. They are also directly opposed to God's promises to establish Jerusalem when the Messiah of Israel comes.

This resulted in beautiful pictures during the Hanukkah event.

Shalom dear friends. Due to the extreme and prolonged cold in Ukraine, the poor Jewish families in particular are enduring difficult times. For this reason, Christians for Israel has decided to organize additional emergency aid in order to raise funds for extra food parcels. Because of the ongoing civil unrest and the violence of the last few years, life is very difficult for the Ukrainian people. The local currency (the hryvnia) has dramatically dropped in value due to the economic downturn. People living on benefits or a small pension can barely make ends meet because of this. The choices they have to make are heartbreaking. Wil I buy a meal or medicine?

By Christians for Israel International.. Seventy nations met in Paris (Sunday January 15, 2017) and signed a Joint Declaration in which they called on Israel and the Palestinians to re-commit themselves to the "two states" solution which they say is the "only way to achieve enduring peace". The declaration, which was perhaps less problematic for Israel than anticipated, has no binding force. But it does have a strong political significance because it supports Security Council resolution 2334 that declared ALL Israeli settlements (= Jews) "illegal", and will only strengthen the desire of many nations to ensure that a Palestinian state is created.

What is going on in the former Soviet Union we can observe today with our very own eyes!

As I write this editorial it is the week before Good Friday and Easter, also known as Holy Week. I am reflecting on the holiness of Jesus, and His suffering in the days leading up to His death and crucifixion. In Luke 19 we read that when Jesus approached Jerusalem for the last time, He wept bitterly over the city. Although greeted by an exuberant crowd, He knew that just days later He would be rejected even by His friends, and die on the cross. I try to enter into His spirit of pain and loneliness. What was He thinking? What did He feel? What prayers did He offer up?

Text: Richard Donk | image: Henk Visscher Sourced with permission from Reformatorisch Dagblad. The war in East Ukraine resulted in a flow of refugees. Many Jews take this opportunity to emigrate to Israel. This is a story about two Jewish families who exchange icy Eastern Europe for a kibbutz in the Negev Desert. A grey Soviet apartment in Zaporozhe in Ukraine. Alarmed pigeons flutter around. A runaway dog skulks around a refuse heap. There are no elevators. So we walk the staircases to the apartment of Olga (29) and Aleksandr Tzarenko (30) and their children Yevgenia and Anna. They are about to ‘make aliyah’ – to emigrate to the Promised Land. Away from the brutality of war that has battered the east of their homeland for so long. And the danger, most definitely, is not something of the past.

On a warm summer's day in the Netherlands, I sit at a table with Koen Carlier as he talks about his work during the past year. “The work expanded tremendously during the past year.” Koen speaks with great engagement. “Our team now consists of fifteen people. One year ago there were only eight. We had three minibuses and now there are seven. And don’t forget, we have a shelter for refugees where Nataliya takes care of people shortly before they leave for Israel.”

By Marijke Terlouw.. We arrive at a dingy Soviet apartment building in East Ukraine. In the cellar a group of Jews is waiting for us. They are given a food parcel donated by you. They receive this small token of encouragement just before the Jewish New Year 5776 (14 and 15 September, 2015). What will the New Year hold? There is good reason for concern about the situation of the Jews in Ukraine. I was in Ukraine for just a few days, in September 2015, but they were very intense days. Of all the stories that I heard, one was even more poignant than the other. I spoke with Jews who were preparing to leave for Israel. Jews who didn’t even consider leaving the Ukraine until a few months ago. The situation in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions became too much for them, for different reasons. You see the same thing happening in the regions bordering the war zone – for example, Mariupol – because there too, the war has left its scars.

Sofiya Otovchitz' story reminds me of the general trend to make Aliyah in the 1990s, when people were not just leaving the country due to economic decline but due to spiritual matters as well. We already knew that mixed marriages cause problems when people want to make Aliyah. Relatives from the non-Jewish husband/wife were usually the main obstacle on the way to Israel.

My summons to continuing prayer for Israel can be summarized in one Bible verse, which at the same time shows the seriousness of the situation: “Let the priests, who minister before the Lord, weep between the portico and the altar. Let them say, “Spare your people, Lord. Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn, a byword among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’” (Joel 2:17) The nations scorn Israel and mock God. So we have the more reason to humble ourselves and continue to stand with Israel. This intercessory letter focuses on humbling ourselves.

Dear friends, We are living in momentous days. The Jewish people are coming home to the land. Collapse of the Israel/Palestinian peace talks. The nations of the world in conflict. Rise of extreme Islam. Demise of the US and rise of other global superpowers. Financial, environmental and energy crises, confusion in Europe. Rise of humanist secularism, and collapse of institutional churches. The Gospel of the Kingdom being preached in many nations and languages. Jesus said – learn the lesson of the fig tree. Heed the signs of His coming. Keep watch and pray. The core mission of Christians for Israel is to raise awareness in the Church about God’s purposes with Israel and the Jewish people, and the implications of this for Israel, the Church and the nations. We seek to do this primarily by training and equipping speakers and communicators, and through the media.

Hundreds of rockets have been fired in recent weeks from the Gaza strip into Israel. Since the start of Operation Protective Edge more than 1500 rockets have been. Hamas is claiming responsibility for all of these attacks. The residents of southern Israel are being forced to stay close to the bomb shelters. Summer camps for children in southern Israel have been closed by the Israeli army. Thousands of children are being evacuated to other parts of the country. The current IDF ground operation is intended inter alia to uncover and destroy tunnels coming into Israel from the Gaza strip. Hamas has on a number of occasions attempted to penetrate Israel through underground tunnels using them to instigate terror attacks; this is a major factor threatening Israel’s security. Hamas is also using houses, schools, mosques, and hospitals to store and launch rockets into Israeli civilian areas. The IDF is making every effort to cause as little harm as possible to Palestinian civilians, but there are many casualties. This personal email received on Friday 18th July from Michael Freund, Chairman of Shavei Israel, gives an insight into the tensions caused by the current conflict.

By Harald Eckert.. Christians for Israel International (C4II), together with Ebenezer / Operation Exodus International (an Aliyah ministry) and the European Coalition for Israel have launched a unique global prayer initiative for the 100 days between January 27th and May 8th, 2015. January 27th, 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz Concentration Camp in 1945 (today: UN-Holocaust memorial day) and May 8th, 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe which also brought the Holocaust to an end. Today, Israel as a nation is being threatened not only by hostile Islamic neighbors, but also by powerful anti-Semitic forces among the nations in a way that is alarmingly similar to the way Jews in Europe were threatened 70 and more ago years by Nazi-Germany and her allies. 70 years ago most of the church was asleep. We drive for hours through the snow covered landscape of the Ukrainian province of Khmelnitsky. Koen Carlier, of Christians for Israel in the Ukraine, tells me about the origin of the region’s name. Bagdan Khmelnitsky, leader of the national movement responsible for the atrocious murder of more than 600,000 Jews in 1654, is honoured as a local hero. This is just one example of the many dark sides of the Ukraine’s history.

About 300 people gathered on Monday morning, January 13th, at the head office of the PGGM pension fund in Zeist, the Netherlands. They showed their anger about PGGM’s decision to stop their investments in five of the largest banks in Israel. The workers of the pension fund were confronted with a large crowd of people with Israeli flags and banners on which PGGM was asked to stop the boycott against Israel. They all received the open letter that Christians for Israel Netherlands wrote to the board of PGGM.

On Friday, December 27th, we succeeded in delivering the last food parcels for 2013 to all areas as planned. Here and there we heard people saying: ‘we thought you’d forgotten us!’ In this place you can plan all you want, but putting it into practice is another story. When we arrive at a new location with one or more food parcels, and receive an invite to have a ‘quick’ cup of tea, we might as well add another 1 to 2 hours to our time, and more if there is much interest or are many questions about Israel and their return! But this is, in fact, why we are here!

Is the present quiet the lull before the storm for Israel? Let’s realize that not only in politics many things are happening behind the screens. Most of all is happening in the heavenlies. Isn’t that the thing we ought to do, setting our hearts on the things that are above? So do intercede for Israel on the basis of God’s word and promises for His land and people.

In the sixth month God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, we can read this in Luke 1:26-38. These are words that are very well known in the whole Christian world. Whenever we approach Christmas in the Sundays of advent before the feast of Christmas, all these messages are read from the Bible and in many churches many pastors are teaching about this.

As the year draws to an end, it is my joy and privilege to send you a word of greeting. For Israel the year 2013 was not an easy year. The situations in the neighboring countries have gotten even more unstable. The Iranian threat – with the Geneva agreement – has become greater and not lesser. The financial and social challenges of the nation are tense. The isolation of Israel amongst the nations and the media has grown. But still, there has been a comparably good level of quietness and absence of terror. And God is continuing to fulfil his promises towards the Jewish people and the relationship between us and the people of Israel – at many different levels – has never been as strong as today.

Many Jews traditionally leave the ‘Northern Countries’ during the last two months of the year. The many official documents, required by both the Israeli embassy and the local authorities, take approximately 1 to 2 years to assemble. By leaving now, people will avoid the possible interference of new rules that might be introduced in 2014. Winter has not yet put in an appearance, but that can change in an instant.

The food parcel action is in full swing now. Food parcels were distributed to quite a number of small villages by Nataliya Krizhanovski, our Christians for Israel co-worker in the Ukraine, for the first time. This is done in alliance with the leaders of the small Jewish communities who know the exact amount of food parcels required by individuals. The food parcels are a sign of comfort, and the people are brought to a momentary standstill when we tell them that this operation is made possible by individuals mostly from the Netherlands and Belgium.

The Israeli cabinet has finally decided to give the green light to the return of the Bnei Menashe Jews. The Bnei Menashe (sons of Manasseh) claim descent from one of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel, who were sent into exile by the Assyrian Empire more than 27 centuries ago. Their ancestors wandered through Central Asia and the Far East for centuries, before settling in what is now northeastern India, along the border with Burma and Bangladesh. Throughout their sojourn in exile, the Bnei Menashe continued to practice Judaism just as their ancestors did, including observing the Sabbath, keeping kosher, celebrating the festivals and following the laws of family purity. And they continued to nourish the dream of one day returning to the land of their ancestors, the Land of Israel.
