European Coalition for Israel commemorates 90th anniversary of San Remo conference
On April 24th and 25th the European Coalition for Israel (ECI), in conjunction with Canadian Supporters for Israel’s Legal Rights (CASILIER), will commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the signing of the San Remo resolution in 1920 by organizing a series of events in Villa Ormond in Sanremo, Italy sponsored by the Mayor of Sanremo Maurizio Zoccarato and The International Institute for Humanitarian Law.
At an international conference on Saturday 24th April legal experts, political insiders and media pundits will look at “The Legal significance of the San Remo resolution as it relates to the status of Israel and Jerusalem under International Law”. On the speakers list you will find legal experts such as Dr Jacques Gauthier, Salomon Benzimra and Goldi Steiner from Canada, elected leaders such as MEP Bastiaan Belder from the European Parliament and MP Fiona Nierenstein from the Italian Parliament. From international media you will hear from well known commentators Daniel Pipes and Caroline Glick.
Keynote speaker Doctor Jacques Gauthier has done extensive research on the legal status of the Old City of Jerusalem which he presented for his doctoral thesis at the University of Geneva in 2007. His conclusions are that “the Old City of Jerusalem is historically part of Israel as defined by the Supreme Council of the Allied Powers in Sanremo in 1920.”
On Sunday 25th April an Official Ceremony marking the 90th Anniversary of the Signing of the Sanremo resolution will be held in Villa Ormond. Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini has been invited as keynote speaker (to be confirmed) and will be joined by international dignitaries from three continents. Descendants of some of the original signatories, such as Lord Balfour and Prime Minister Lloyd-George have been invited to attend the event. A separate visit will be arranged to the original site of the signing of the resolution at the historical Villa Devachan.
Quote from the invitation letter from conference organizer Tomas Sandell of the European Coalition for Israel: “For the past two decades, the Middle East process has been based on the notion of “land for peace”. We do not believe that diplomacy should be divorced from international law. None of the recent peace plans issued to date mentions the legal rights of Israel enshrined in international law. This seminar will take a closer look at the historical and legal realities in the Middle East based on the proceedings in the Sanremo peace conference on 24-25 April 1920.”
